You give her the best food in the store.
Dental treats every night. A cleaning whenever the vet says so. A water fountain, because you read that hydration protects her kidneys.
You felt like a good owner. You were one.
But then she climbed onto your chest one night and you noticed something nobody warned you about.
Her breath had changed.
She was dropping her food.
Her energy dropped. She slept all afternoon. She stopped chasing the feather wand. And at her checkup, her kidney values came back "at the high end of normal."
Then it followed you into bed.
You stopped letting her sleep on your pillow. You started turning your face away when she pushed it into yours. You started bracing for her instead of reaching for her.
Not because you stopped loving her.
Because her breath changed how close you could be.
You started searching for answers.
More dental treats. A water additive. Chicken toothpaste. A finger brush she fought. Another cleaning under anesthesia. A second water fountain. Kidney-care food.
Nothing seemed to bring back her breath, her energy, or the numbers on her bloodwork.
And nobody connected the dots.
Until you found the reason.
